The Benefits of Herbs and Fruits
By Capuli Club / 3.02.2021
Now more than ever, our own vitality and the health of those around us is so important.
I’m sure you’ve seen tips and tricks to stay healthy all over the internet. I know I sure have. So how do we know which tips to believe? What can we actually do?
It’s easy to over-complicate health and think that we must be perfect in every aspect of our life to live a healthy life. I couldn’t disagree more.
I believe that the best way to promote vitality is naturally, through nutritious, whole foods, and fresh herbs and fruits. Although staying active and having positive mental health is necessary, making sure to put nutritious foods in your body is one of the easiest places to start!
Capuli uses a diverse group of ingredients to help you live a healthier, cleaner lifestyle. Below, I dive specifically into the benefits of three herbs used in our teas: Lavender, Matcha, and Elderberry and focus on how they will help you stay healthy and uplifted during difficult times.
Lavender
Lavender is a very common herb used in various food and beverage items across the globe. The most commonly known benefit of lavender is its calming and stress relieving effects, and indeed, this may be one of the most important effects of lavender in aiding our immune systems.
When used in tea, lavender is able to act on our endocrine system, the system in our body that is responsible for releasing hormones into our blood, and reduce the release of stress hormones. So, why is this important for promoting strong immunity?
High levels of stress hormones in the blood have been shown to downregulate the immune system. In other words, having high levels of stress hormones in your blood will ultimately increase your susceptibility to foreign bacteria and viruses.
Now, of course, lavender alone will not completely rid of all of the stress you may feel in your life. Supplemented with a mindfulness practice (meditation, journaling, affirmations, etc.), however, you may begin to notice a major shift in your well-being.
In addition to its stress-reducing properties, drinking lavender tea before bed may help you get a better, more restful night of sleep. Because sleep has been associated with improved immune function, this benefit of lavender also has the potential to increase your health.
Matcha
Matcha is a specific type of green tea that uses the entire tea leaf, therefore making it the most powerful and nutritionally beneficial form of green tea. Because of its potent nature, matcha offers a host of health benefits.
The most relevant benefit of matcha consumption are its antioxidant properties. Matcha contains a specific chemical that has been proven to be heavily involved in the bodies’ antioxidant activity. These antioxidants are known to reduce inflammation and protect the heart from disease, as well as possessing the ability to fight off harmful environmental agents. Ultimately, the dozens of antioxidants present in matcha work together to help protect our body from harmful agents, like viruses and other illness-inducing-agents.
Similar to lavender, matcha also possesses the ability to reduce the effects of stress. As explained above, stress reduction is essential in promoting optimum function of our immune system.
Finally, matcha has been shown to positively impact our emotional health. As it’s no doubt that this pandemic has taken a toll on everyone’s mental health, having a little boost could surely benefit us all!
Elderberry
Elderberry is definitely less common than lavender or matcha, so you might be asking: What is elderberry? Elderberry is a berry that is primarily grown in North America and Europe and possesses high vitamin and mineral levels, as well as high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory function.
In addition, drinking elderberry juice has been associated with clearing inflammation or infections of the respiratory system. Have a sore throat? Drink elderberry tea! Even better, it has been demonstrated that elderberry possesses certain anti-infectious and antibacterial properties, giving it immune-boosting properties. I can’t think of a better tea to have on-hand during the winter months!
In conclusion…. If 2020 taught us anything, it’s the importance of self-care. Having to go to work or do other necessary tasks during this pandemic puts us in situations where we may feel out-of-control of our own health. Practicing wellness and adding whole foods, herbs, and fruits into your diet will help you feel more in-control of your own health, and what’s a better feeling than that? I hope this information empowers you to take ownership of your health. Happy steeping!
